Three semi truck crash causes fire, closes I-70 near East Colfax Avenue

DENVER (KDVR) — Part of Interstate 70 near East Colfax Avenue is closed after three semi trucks were involved in a crash, causing a fire on Friday morning.

The Aurora Police Department said a crash involving three semis was reported around 8:20 a.m. The crash caused one semi to catch fire. SkyFOX flew over the scene, where firefighters appeared to be putting out the flames. Smoke was rising, and a black cloud of smoke could be seen from afar.

Just before 9 a.m., the Colorado Department of Transportation reported that I-70 in both directions was closed at U.S. 40; East Colfax Avenue due to a crash. This is east of Aurora and south of the Denver International Airport. Aurora police said the westbound onramp from E470 also is closed.

The fire has been put out. The Aurora Fire Department said it’s helping contain the spilled diesel fuel, but there is no other hazardous material involved.

At this time, it’s unclear what caused the crash and if there are any injuries. Aurora police said medical responders are on scene evaluating the people involved.

FOX31’s Courtney Fromm is on the scene gathering more information.

Aurora police said there’s no estimated time when the interstate will reopen, and alternate routes are recommended.

This is a developing story. FOX31 will update this post when more information becomes available.
