Thrown object smashes windshields in Centennial; Deputies investigating

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (KDVR) — A Centennial woman says she believes a cup full of rocks thrown from a passing truck shattered her windshield Monday morning, and she’s not the only one.

It happened just before noon on Monday on Dry Creek Place west of Clarkson Street.

Shannon Anderson says she was driving home from Bible study when a white Chevy Silverado passed in the opposite lane. Seconds later, she heard a loud bang.

“You know, I was thinking, ‘What in the world was that? And like, why did my windshield just explode?’” she said. “Just didn’t have time to react.”

Initially, she thought the cup was filled with a liquid.

“There was nothing wet on my car to suggest that it was a drink and so I just have to assume that it was rocks or something heavy to cause the damage that it caused,” said Anderson.

It wasn’t just her. Another woman reported the same crime to Arapahoe County deputies just minutes apart.

“Thankfully, we got video of the truck because again it happens so fast that you’re not always thinking of what kind of car was that, who was it,” Anderson said.

It’s impossible to ignore the echoes of what happened in 2023. 20-year-old Alexa Bartell was killed in a rock-throwing incident in Jefferson County.

“It’s just on everybody’s mind that we should be safe when we’re driving and not have to fear people throwing things at us and causing damage or bodily harm when we’re going down the street,” said Anderson. “I hope that we can find the people that did this and may think this is something that was funny or fun because it’s not.. and it puts people lives at risk.”

Anderson’s car is still drivable, but her sense of safety is like her windshield, shattered.

Now every time she sees a white pickup truck, her mind goes back to that terrifying moment.

“So, it’s definitely something that I was thinking this morning when I went to work and what’s going to happen and looking for a white pickup truck as I was driving, just trying to find that person,” she said.

The suspect’s truck may have black plates and stickers in the front window.

Anderson hopes someone recognizes it and helps prevent this from happening again.

“I want these people to be found and to be held responsible. Thankfully, it didn’t cause me bodily harm and I’m not injured, but it could have been a lot more impactful,” she said. “I’m thankful that my children weren’t in the car and didn’t have to experience that as well.”

Investigators say it’s still early in the case and more information could come as they further investigate. If you recognize the truck or have surveillance video in the area, you’re urged to call the sheriff’s office at 303-795-4711.
