Watch: Cats receive oxygen from medical crews after fire in Jefferson County

DENVER (KDVR) — Four cats are safe and with their family after firefighters rescued them from a garage fire and administered oxygen to two of them on Monday.

A little before 10 a.m., South Metro Fire Rescue responded to a fire on Allison Way in unincorporated Jefferson County.

Once crews arrived, a working garage fire was quickly put under control.

All residents safely evacuated the home and reported that four cats were inside.

One of the cats was rescued and administered oxygen by SMFR medical crews. Another cat was rescued and given oxygen as a precaution before it was released to the homeowner.

South Metro Fire Rescue shared videos of the process in a thread of posts on X. The videos show firefighters holding a small oxygen mask around the cats’ faces. One of the cats grabbed onto the mask and pawed it off its face to look around at the scene while the firefighters offered comforting pets.

In a later update, the agency said that all four cats had been found and were “doing well.”

The fire did not extend from the garage into the home, and the cause is still under investigation. West Metro Fire Rescue and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist.
