DENVER (KDVR) — Police caught two drivers going well over the speed limit in Westminster, according to a post on X from the Westminster Police Department.
The drivers were clocked on U.S. Highway 36, which has multiple speed limits depending on the area. In Colorado, speed limits include a maximum of 65 miles per hour, 55 miles per hour and can reach lower speeds of 35 miles per hour in construction zones and city limits.
The surprisingly slower of the two drivers was caught going 114 miles per hour, nearly 50 miles per hour over the highest potential speed limit.
That speed was smurfed by the top speed of the second driver, who was traveling at a staggering 124 miles per hour, which is nearly double the highest potential speed limit on U.S. 36 in Colorado.
“That ticket? You don’t want it, and you definitely don’t want the consequences that come with it,” said the department.
The Colorado General Assembly said that drivers who are traveling 25 miles per hour or more over the speed limit are eligible for a fine of up to $300 in non-construction zones, where that figure jumps to $1,000.
Drivers may also face a minimum of 10 days in jail, with a maximum of 90 days for non-construction zones and a year for construction zones.
The driver would also be docked 12 points on their license, which would result in an automatic suspension of the license regardless of the person’s age.
“Last year, our traffic officers responded to more than 1,600 crashes, many caused by speeding and distracted driving. These are metro-wide problems. We know you’re tired of it and we are too,” said the department.
Westminster police ask those who see dangerous driving to call 911.
