DENVER (KDVR) — The leaves are still changing colors around Colorado, but snow is already falling in the mountains, and in about a month, it could start to fall in Denver, too.
It’s still in the 80s in Denver by mid-September, but flakes are falling across the Front Range.
Snow was falling on several peaks across Colorado in early September, with flakes covering Pikes Peak and light snow on Wilkerson Pass. By mid-September, some ski resorts like Breckenridge Ski Resort, Keystone Ski Resort and Arapahoe Basin reported their first snow of the season as well.
While it’s just starting to turn into fall across Colorado, with some leaves in peak season as soon as late September, winter isn’t far behind. Bad news for summer lovers and good news for the ski season, the Pinpoint Weather team expects snow to come soon.
When will it snow in Denver?
According to FOX31 Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels, the average first measurable snowfall in Denver lands on Oct. 18. Over the last 10 years, the first snow has fallen as early as Sept. 8 in 2020 to as late as Nov. 17 in 2016.
While it’s not impossible to see snow in September and early October, Michels said with the slightly dry and warmer fall on the forecast, the first snow is expected to land on Halloween.
In the meantime, Michels said snow will continue to fall on the mountain peaks, with the tops starting to look white and staying that way for the winter. Lower elevations and mountain towns have a chance of snow in the forecast in about two weeks, with a decent amount along the Continental Divide.
So, start sharpening your skis and pulling out those winter coats, as the snow is coming in the mountains, and ski areas are expecting to open in a little more than a month.
