Why Colorado drivers should carry physical license, not just their digital ID

DENVER (KDVR) — Society is in the digital age, with plenty of apps and resources available to help with identification, documents and records — but Colorado State Patrol is reminding Coloradans that not everyone is ready to fully embrace the digital ether quite yet.

CSP is warning drivers that apps like myColorado can be useful in different scenarios, but when driving, it is still required by state law to have a physical copy of your driver’s license, proof of insurance and registration, the agency said in a press release on Thursday.

The Colorado Digital IDTM can be accepted as a legal form of identification in Colorado, but various factors may nullify its use, including:

  • CSP has been accepting the digital IDs since 2020, but not all local police and sheriff departments follow suit
  • Unfamiliarity with the app
  • Lack of internet connection
  • A dead phone battery
  • Phones being broken or damaged in a crash
  • Devices may be lost or inaccessible

If a driver finds themselves in a situation where they don’t have access to the digital license and also don’t have their physical copy, they may be charged with refusal to display a driver’s license, a misdemeanor in Colorado.

CSP says that not only is it required to have your physical license, but it also helps speed up the process during traffic stops, which gets both parties off the shoulder of the road, enhancing road safety for everyone around.
