Woman facing six counts of animal cruelty after deputy allegedly found dead puppies

DENVER (KDVR) — A report of possible animal cruelty near Salida in late August has led to a woman facing a half dozen charges, the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday.

On Aug. 27, Chaffee County Deputy Bryant Young was sent to a home west of Salida after the dispatch center received an anonymous report of possible animal cruelty occurring at the residence.

The sheriff’s office said that when Young arrived, he found three puppies and two chickens dead on the property. Two other puppies were found on the property, along with an adult dog. Bryant said that none of the dogs had any access to food or water.

Because of the poor living conditions, the deputy confiscated the three surviving dogs.

The agency then called in the Ark Valley Humane Society to transport the surviving dogs and provide immediate care. The three dead puppies were also confiscated for examination.

The sheriff’s office said that because of how poor their condition was, one of the two surviving puppies died shortly after it was removed from the property.

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office said that a veterinarian from Humane Colorado’s Animal Protection Team conducted necropsies on the four dogs and determined they had all died of severe dehydration, starvation, secondary infections and lack of veterinarian care.

Because of the findings, the dogs’ owner and resident of the property was arrested on Thursday, according to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office.

Sage Maupin, 29, is facing six counts of cruelty to animals, which are misdemeanor charges. She was released from the Chaffee County Detention Center on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond. A search of Colorado court records did not show when Maupin is expected to appear in court.
