Would-be nimrods must pass a test before hunting in Colorado

CHERRY CREEK STATE PARK, Colo. (KDVR) — Before you hit the field in pursuit of deer, ducks, elk or any game species in Colorado, you are going to need a hunter safety card.

“A hunter safety card is going to give you the knowledge to go out and be in the field and hunt safely,” said Cherry Creek State Park manager Michelle Seubert. If you were born on or after Jan. 1, 1949, you will need a hunter safety card.

You just don’t get a hunter safety card; you have to earn it.

“You have to take a course. There are courses where some of its online and then you go to a one-day class and then we do offer where you can go to a two-day class,” said Seubert.

You will learn the very basics of the do’s and don’ts when pursuing game in our great state. And it just so happens you’re in luck.  You can take a hunter safety class at locations throughout Colorado. In the class, you’ll learn the minimum required to be safe and keep others safe in the field.

And yes, if you feel that need to be a nimrod, and nimrod means hunter, you’re going to need to know the rules of firearm safety.

“When you take the class, they’ll have all different kinds of guns there and learning about the safety. Where is the safety on the gun. How do you need to carry the gun,” said Seubert.
Now, do you need a coveted hunter safety card to fish? Naw. Just don’t hook yourself. You will need a license to fish, however.
