DENVER (KDVR) — One of Mapleton Public School District’s Thornton schools will be closed Thursday after a garbage truck hit overhead power lines and knocked out power to York International School.
The lines, located at York Street and 93rd Avenue, were hit around dismissal time on Wednesday and damaged connected pieces of electrical equipment nearby. District officials said they hoped the power outage would be resolved on Wednesday night, but that was not the case.
Officials only canceled class for York International School due to the power outage and shared the following message with parents and guardians of the school.
We want to share an important update regarding power at York International School. After further inspection, Xcel Energy discovered that the damage caused by the downed power lines is more extensive than originally thought. Unfortunately, this means crews will not be able to restore power in time for school tomorrow.
As a result, York International will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 4, and all classes are canceled. Crews will continue working near the school throughout the day, with the goal of restoring power so that classes can resume on Friday.
We know this closure is unexpected, and we truly appreciate your patience and support as we work through this situation. Please watch for additional updates as we stay in close contact with Xcel Energy.
Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to welcoming students back as soon as possible.
No other Mapleton Public Schools will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 4. York International School has classes for kindergarten through 12th grade.
